Surrendering Equines
As with other animals, WCHS will accept any equine
(horse, donkey, mule) that is in need. There is no fee, however as horse
owners know it is very expensive to provide good care to this type of
animal, so donations are highly encouraged. These animals require a large
amount of space and resources, financial and otherwise. Anyone wishing to
surrender an equine to WCHS must agree to the following:
*
WCHS accepts equines in two different categories. Owned equines – this means
that you, as the person surrendering the equine to the WCHS, must sign a
release certifying that the animal is your own property and that no one else
has any legal interest in it. This is necessary for both the welfare of the
animal and for the protection of the WCHS. Stray/abandoned equines – any
equine surrendered without such written assurance. These are dealt with in
accordance with Ohio law.
*
Once an equine is voluntarily surrendered to WCHS it will be considered the
property of WCHS from that moment forward. WCHS will have complete and sole
discretion as to the disposition of that animal, including, but not limited
to, selection of stabling location, provision of veterinary care, foster
placement, adoption, and/or humane euthanasia. While every effort will be
made to place adoptable equines into suitable homes, WCHS, as with its other
open access programs, can make no guarantees or assurances as to the final
disposition of any animal accepted.
*
When surrendering an equine, you may provide us with as much, or as little
information about the history, background and training of that animal as you
desire. While such information will likely be passed on to veterinarians,
caretakers and potential adopters, information as to who surrendered the
animal and/or the location at which the animal formerly resided will remain
confidential.
*
Anyone adopting an equine through WCHS is required to sign a legally binding
contract securing the health and safety of the animal, and must agree to
return the animal to WCHS. should they ever be unable to keep it. This way,
even though we will not release to whoever surrenders an equine the name of
the person who adopts it, be assured that all steps are taken to ensure that
the animal will never suffer the horrors of abuse or neglect, nor will it
ever be sent off to auction or slaughter.
*
Again, there is no fee for surrendering an equine to WCHS, but the cost of
caring for this type of animal is very high. Therefore, we request that you
consider making a donation of whatever you can contribute when you surrender
your equine to WCHS to help us continue our equine rescue effort.
Thank you for caring enough about your equine to surrender it to WCHS. We
are committed to ending equine abuse and suffering by ensuring that no
equine ever has to languish in an abusive or neglectful condition, or has to
suffer the trauma of going to auction or slaughter, and we appreciate the
part you have played in securing your animal’s future.
